Dare devil armed robbers yesterday swooped on a van carrying expatriate construction workers in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital and shot dead a Mobile Policeman.
The incident, according to some eye witnesses, occurred in the early hours of Tuesday along Mbierebe junction close to the Goodluck Jonathan Boulevard.
“They accosted the helix van and instantly shot and killed the Police Orderly guarding the expatriates before carting away huge sum of money from the vehicle before speeding off with hails of gunshots to scare away people”, Effiong Isang, a petrol attendant told Vanguard
Although the identity of the construction firm was not quickly identified at the time of filing this report, it learnt the affected firm is one of the construction companies fixing roads for the State government.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Chukwu Ikechukwu, said “it is unfortunate that we lost one of our men today (yesterday) to armed robbers”, adding that “details are still sketchy”.
“I cannot tell you the identity of the Policeman because I am yet to get details”, he added and promised to explain the details and circumstances surrounding his death “as soon as I am fully briefed”.
