FEW days ago, leaders of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Leather, Rubber, and Non-Metallic Products Employees, NUCFRLANMPE, met at the union’s national secretariat, Otta, Ogun State, on the aegis of the National Administrative Council, NAC/ Central Working Committee, CWC, to review the state of the Union and members’ welfare.
In a communique at the end of the meeting, the leaders among others, decried the upsurge in outsourcing and casualisation of members, lamenting that the aim was to de-unionize members.
While leaders of the Union commended all employers who have commenced the implementation of the National Joint Industrial Negotiating Council, agreement that was signed earlier in the year, they however advised those who are yet to commence payment not to further delay in the interest of industrial peace.
They equally deliberated on meeting the issue of gratuties of its members and resolved that it would be vigorously pursued.
According to the communique at the end of the meeting, “the NAC / CWC described as alarming the rate at which outsourcing and casual work has taken over the sector. We see this as a deliberate attempt by some employers to prevent their employees from Unionisation. This trend negates the International Labour Organisation, ILO Convention on rights of a worker. The Union frowns at this development and advises that the practice be discontinued for industrial peace to reign.”
Similarly, the meeting resolved that in view of the economic challenges in the country the union should diversify into some other key investment that will further boost the financial capacity of the union as the only major source of income presently is through check- off Dues.
Consequently, the meeting called for the speedy completion of the ongoing Ultra Modern shopping Complex project of the union situated along Ijoko road in Sango -Otta, Ogun state .
In addition, the NAC/CWC also resolved on the need for the union to fashion out ways of going into Small Medium Enterprises geared towards empowering members of the union.
