Grazing policy: FG sets up new security group to curb cattle rustling

By Caleb Ayansina

ABUJA—THE Federal Government, yesterday, disclosed that it had established a new security group, called Cattle Ranger, to curb cattle rustling as part of efforts to ensure success of its grazing policy in the country.

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who disclosed this while declaring open a three-day national conference on transformation of Nigerian livestock industry in Abuja,  also rolled out some incentives to those who indicate interest and invest in the livestock sector by establishing ranches across the country.

He made it clear that there was greater hope for those who would go into ranches.

Represented by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, the vice president said the government would meet with neighbouring countries to stop those animals wandering into the country’s porous borders.

He said the new security group had been trained and properly equipped to protect ranches to be established across the country.

He said: “We have now put together a new security group called the Cattle Ranger. These rangers are being trained by the Ministry of Interior, they are heavily harmed, 3,000 of them are being trained. If you start a ranch and you have a security problem, approach us, we will send them to you at no cost.”

“They will protect your investment. We do not want you to go into ranches and in one night all your cattle are taken away. Above that, we intend to give you insurance cover, because we consider this industry serious. There is prosperity in that sector.”
