PORT HARCOURT— An indigenous oil giant, Belema Oil Producing Limited, has promised to end gas flaring in all its operations by 2019.
Managing Director of the firm, Mr Boma Brown, gave the assurance, yesterday, at an interactive session between the firm and its host communities in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He said the firm was set to convert some of the gas to power for its host communities, adding that it will also evacuate what would be left for commercial purpose.
He said: “We will do what is needful. We have already set up a team to monitise our gas. This is turning the gas currently flared into revenue. It is our business model, we want to get the end customer to get the gas. We will also convert gas to power for our communities. We will compress it and send to the market.
“We can do much better as a country. If you bring the proper market into focus, there will be improvement. The engagement is already ongoing with some companies to evacuate the gas. We are ending gas flaring in our host communities by 2019.”
Deputy Managing Director of the firm, Mr Pedro Dayas, in his speech earlier, said the firm was determined to share benefits with its host communities, adding that some of the indigenes will be gainfully employed while many others would be trained in productive skills.
“The community is dear to us. Belema Oil is interested in sharing with its communities. It is important the people develop skills, we will be there for this. Some will be integrated directly into our system. We will get involved in developing our communities,” he said.
He said that the host communities will be made to see oil resource as a blessing, adding that the company will set aside good budget for community development every year.
