A-Ibom bans parading of kidnap suspects before newsmen

UYO—Television cameras were positioned as photo-journalists and newsmen prepared to interview five suspected kidnappers arrested by operatives of Akwa Ibom State Police Command over the abduction of two Turkish nationals.

However, the journalists were disappointed when the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Don Awunah, walked into the conference hall without the suspects.

The Commissioner promptly told journalists: “Of course, there is something that is missing. The traditional display of guns recovered from suspects and the parading of arrested suspects will not be on display today.”

He said he had to shun that aspect of the briefing because of the embarrassment it causes families of suspects even when the court of law have not given verdict on them.

Turkish kidnap

Mr. Awunah disclosed that five persons, who were arrested in connection with the kidnapping of two Turkish nationals and taken to the creeks of Calabar/Oron waterways, were in the police custody while further investigation is ongoing.

His words: “Five robbers, who snatched a Toyota Hiace with number plates, AYB 659 XP, belonging to one Sabbath Ekeke, from the driver at gunpoint along Ikot Ekpene-Aba Road in Akwa Ibom State, have been arrested.

“Discreet investigation led to the arrest of two of the suspects within Akwa Ibom State, while the other three were arrested in Abia State.”

He further disclosed that 72 cultists publicly renounced their membership of various cult groups that hitherto terrorised innocent citizens of the state.
