Uyo—IN further demonstration of its commitment to sustaining the free and compulsory education policy in Akwa Ibom State, the governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has granted approval for the upgrading and incorporation of seven community schools into the system.
The state government also announced the commencement of the Transport Insurance Scheme to cushion the effect of accidents for transport operators.
State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, who made the disclosure while briefing Government House correspondents, said that the decision was taken at Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting.
Udoh listed the affected schools to include Community Technical College, Ikot Udoe, in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Urban High School, Ikot Akpan Essie (Oruk Anam) Excellence Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikot Uya, (Mkpat Enin), Migrant Secondary School, Emeruke, (Eastern Obolo).
Others are Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Ekeya, (Okobo), Union Secondary School, Ibiaku, Ibono Ibom and Community Secondary School, (Uruan) Obo/Ikot Ata Usung/Ikot Obong Odoro, (Ikot Ekpene).
He disclosed that community schools did not take part in the free education programme of the government, adding that state government decided to take over the schools in order to provide qualitative and free education to more communities.
On the Transport Insurance Scheme, Udoh explained that five percent of the amount paid as taxes, will be deposited with the insurance company in trust, while beneficiaries of the scheme will be entitled to some benefits in the event of an accident.
He added that state government also approved the adoption and implementation of Akwa Ibom State Rural Development Master plan to fast-track more rural development projects, noting that over 150 of such projects had already been executed across rural communities in the state in the last two years.
