UGHELLI—EX-MILITANTS under the Phase II Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, have threatened to protest at the home of the coordinator of the programme and Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Brigadier-General Paul Boroh (retd), if stipends meant for those currently being trained under the programme are stopped.
The ex-militants also warned that they would have no option than to return to the creeks as an alternative to their alleged ill treatment.
Addressing newsmen, yesterday in Ughelli, Delta State, Public Relations Officer of Bayelsa State chapter of the ex-militants, Phase II, Clinton Ebiama, disclosed that in line with cutting cost for the programme, the management of the programme has concluded plans to stop the payment of stipends for amnesty beneficiaries currently undergoing various forms of training.
He said: “The Federal Government has already budgeted the monies to be spent on the programme in this year’s budget and any move to stop such payment, is an act to shortchange beneficiaries of the programme.”
“Those of us embarking on these trainings use our monthly stipends to take care of our family. But if Boroh insist on stopping the payment, we would have no option than to return to the creek and he should know that his community, Otofofani in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State will be the first place we would establish a camp.”
