Enthronement of corporate governance will curb corruption -Dogara

JOS —THE Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara has said he will support the enthronement of corporate governance in the country which he argued has the potential to curb corruption and ensure a viable economy which would be beneficial to all citizens.

Dogara stated this yesterday in Jos, the Plateau State capital during the 81st inaugural lecture of the University of Jos delivered by Professor Joash Amupitan of the Faculty of Law and titled: “Nigerian Corporate Governance: From Concentrated Ownership to Dispersed Ownership – Which Way Forward”   In his remark, the Speaker, an alumnus of the Faculty who led some Members of the House of Representatives to attend the lecture also noted that it was necessary for corporate governance to be enthroned in the country because it can help the country recover fully from recession and catch up with the rest of the world in terms of development.

Earlier, Professor Amupitan while delivering the lecture stressed that the lecture seeks to expose the need to shift concentration from family ownership of companies into dispersed or market centred ownership in Nigeria.

According to him, “Family ownership of companies does not allow for corporate governance because shareholders are same as Managers and Board meetings can easily be transformed into shareholders meetings.

“As the society develops and owing to the role of companies in economic development of nations, most nations have moved from family ownership to dispersed or diverse ownership. These resulted into the emergence of transnational companies that carry business beyond borders and those companies have become richer than even sovereign States.”
