Kogi orders payment of lecturers’ salaries

LOKOJA—Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has ordered the payment of all outstanding salaries of Kogi State University lecturers, who have been on strike for six months.

Bello also called on the striking lecturers and other categories of staff to resume work immediately in the interest of the students, who have been badly affected since January.

The governor, who gave the order at a stakeholders’ meeting yesterday, said he was touched when the students knelt down to beg him to reopen the institution.

Earlier, the Chairman of the newly-constituted Governing Council of the institutions, Professor Adam Ahmed, appealed to the governor to rescind some of government’s earlier decisions in the interest of peace.

He also appealed to the Academic Staff Union of University, Anyingba chapter, to cooperate with the institution’s management.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Abdulkadir, highlighted the challenges facing the university community, and appealed for solution.
