Technology will make learning easier —Ambode

By Amaka Abayomi & Elizabeth Uwandu

LAGOS State Governor,   Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said the rapid advancement in technology, especially the internet, will make learning a lot easier for Lagosians.

He made this known at the launch of the first digital library in the state, which is one of Africa’s  largest learning platforms where, among others things, a global competitive economy would be built;  and which would make Lagos the next technological hub in Africa. The library is also expected to provide access to knowledge for all through the collection and citation of digital content by online portal.

Present at the historic launch were the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, who represented Ambode; Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh; Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun; Director, Lagos State Library Board, Mr. Tajudeen Lawal and private and public stakeholders in the education sector.

According to Ambode, “Based on available statistics, Africa is expected to reach 500 million internet users by 2020, majority of whom will access internet through mobile devices. This administration is, however, thinking and working ahead by launching this digital library knowing that technology will play a major role in achieving our dream of becoming Africa’s model megacity and global economic and financial hub.

“The digital library will provide a repository of contents which include 2,000 study aids on core subjects from primary to senior secondary school curriculum, over 1,600 tutorials, instructional videos and selected e-books.”

from primary to SS3 approved texts, brief history of Lagos State, online forum, podcasts and exam-mate (a test resource).

“The contents also include quality research papers from Lagos State tertiary institutions covering a wide variety of topics digitized for the platform in various forms such as vocational videos, entrepreneurship contents, creatively presented history lessons and online courses on coding. This portal will be accessible via internet connection on a range of devices, from desktop computers to feature phones regardless of location, age or social economic status.”

For the Special Adviser, Mr. Bank-Olemoh, the issue of sustainability of the library and the accessibility of its contents will not be a problem as the state has partnered with individuals for the smooth running of the initiative.

He said “This initiative has come to stay as every necessary mechanism for the first digital library start up in Lagos is being put in place, including partnership with private investors and other education stakeholders to see that the portal is rich in content and is continually upgraded. On the issue of accessibility, the portal, www.educatelagos.com will be open for students, researchers and lovers of knowledge at all times.”
