Uyo—Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed the Local Government Administration bill 2017 into law.
The passage followed the consideration of the report of the Joint House Committees on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; and Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions submitted by the Chairman, Idongesit Ntekpere during plenary, yesterday.
The new law is in line with section 4 (7) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The new local government administration law which empowers the House of Assembly to make laws for the peace, order, and good governance of the state or any part thereof, repeals the 2007 law.
The lawmakers in their separate contributions pointed out that the new local government law will enhance the provision of basic social amenities to the rural people.
They also pointed out that the new law will guarantee the attainment of full potentials of local government administration and also put to rest the controversies that had surrounded the 2007 law over the years.
Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Head of the Joint committee, Ntekpere, said that the law now makes it mandatory for the swearing in ceremony of democratically elected officials of the local government councils.
In his remarks, Speaker of the House, Mr. Onofiok Luke said that the new law which is a fundamental legal document would consolidate on the efforts of Akwa Ibom government in delivering good governance at the grassroots level.
Luke added besides being outdated and not capable of addressing the current issues said the current Assembly thought it necessary to amend the old law in view of myriads of challenges plaguing our local government system in Akwa Ibom.
